on but if you talk to romney people in private, and they have been quoted in background pieces in the last few days, they'll say look, we're losing, this is a good chance to change the dynamic so he needs to step up. >> charles blow, how does he step up? because there is this conundrum. he's not very likeable to the electorate from all the polls, even today, obama is way ahead on likability. he doesn't have that ready reagan kind of charm. but he's got to exude some of that, i think, at the same time he's got to beat up barack obama verbally so that everyone goes away thinking romney won. how does he do both? >> well, i don't know how he does both. i don't believe he's capable of doing both. i do think you're right to put it in two parts which is one, he has to dig himself out of the hole that he has put himself in. with the gaffes and the kind of robotic nature and all that. the second thing he has to do to stand next to a sitting president of the united states and say i am an attractive alternative to this. what you have to look at this is like this is the last round of interviews. we alread

with you, ross. romney's got it all to play for, good and bad, depending on who you talk to. this is make or break time in a good or bad way. chris christie believes and i will quote here, i've seen mitt romney do this before. he's going to come in, he's going to lay out his vision for america, contrast his view with the president's record and it's going to be the president's views for the future. this whole race is going to be turned upside down come thursday morning. boom. job done. >> that's why people love chris christie. because he tells something at least vaguely approaching the truth which is that whether or not romney actually succeeds in pulling something like that off, that's close to what he needs right now. if you listen to what paul ryan says in public and interviews and what romney surrogates say, they'll downplay expectations and say obama's a great orator and so on but if you talk to romney people in private, and they have been quoted in background pieces in the last few days, they'll say look, we're losing, this is a good chance to change the dynamic so he needs to step u

romney do? he should really be more deft in talk about his life story. for some reason, he shied away from that, whether it's the role that faith has had in his life and certainly the production that he oversaw at bain capital and other places. this man helped create actual businesses and by extension, he says thousands of jobs. i take him at his word, at places like sports authority, best buy, staples. these are everyday household names. he ought to be willing to do that. i also think he has to show a little leg and go on the offense against president obama which is my entire point about making this -- putting the president on the defensive and letting him explain his record because obama '08 no longer exists. those debates were great for him because he can run on promises, he can make people feel hopeful. he now has to run on his record. >> i agree with this. jennifer granholm, when i watched the convention speeches for the democratic convention, i thought that bill clinton made a mesmerizing speech, brilliant both in the rhetoric and the devil of the detail which was undeniable. al

the election. early voting begins next tuesday. listen to governor romney. >> a lot of people can talk. talk is cheap. you can be eloquent and describe the wonderful things you can do. but when you cut through the words you can look at the record. and you can see the jobs that america needs and you know it is time to choose a new leader and get a coach and get america growing again. >> the polls the new "new york times" cbs poll has president obama with a nine point lead. the 12 point lead over mitt romney romney. how bad is this for the romney campaign? he is a genius behind the 538 blog. welcome, you are a genius. you have an extraordinary grasp. with this book, the of just question to you, 41 day to go, who is going to win? >> we have a think like a gambleler and we have an 80% favorite. that number has been going up. we actually had it first begin to peak after the conventions but since romney's 47% comments we have his 47% win. you talked about the polls are maybe some of the best numbers we have seen for obama in any state that we have seen. almost all of the swing states that you have

jobs to virginia. >> talking jobs in battleground america. president obama and mitt romney today in the crucial state of virginia. both candidates fighting for every vote. let's bring in my political all-stars, charles blow, op ed columnist for the "new york times" and republican pollster, kristen soltis. kristen, let me start with you. your guy's in a hell of a lot of trouble. i'm looking at some polls here, doesn't matter who you believe, suffolk university, fox news, quinnipiac, "new york times," cbs, all of them in virginia against likely voters have obama comfortably ahead. this is a big problem for mitt romney, isn't it? >> i don't think it's quite a big a problem as you have made it out to be. there was a poll suffolk university had out just tonight that had obama up by two. so it is true you've got obama up in swing states like virginia by small margins. but there's become this narrative that's really developed over the last week that the race is starting to get away from governor romney that i think is not really founded in necessarily good data. you know, out of five po

represents more of the same. >> mitt romney, blasting president obama as more of the same. now my all-star panel, b.j. crowley, and richard williamson. let's talk about bill clinton for a moment. i interviewed him today, a fascinating interview in many ways, such a charismatic, powerful, influential figure, let's start with up is it massively helpful, having this kind of huge beast now fully behind you guys? because all of the he evidence shows since he made the barn-storming convention speech, are you back in the driving seat. >> well, i think that, you know, the president -- both presidents, you know, have gravitas on foreign policy and president clinton did give president obama a boost in charlotte, and i think this allows the president on a day like today, you knowto look presidential. i think probably governor romney felt the same way in coming to cgi. i think both men being there, it's important to put foreign policy front and center at this point in the campaign. >> i thought it was good mitt romney went there, cracked a couple of good jokes, and you have to say, look at the ov
